In November 1971, the developmental work on EARS, known as the first laser printer was completed by Gary Starkweather who combined a laser beam with an adopted Xerox copier technology to build the first laser printer. However, in 1976 IBM installed the first high-speed laser printer, IBM 3800 Printing System to be used in the industry. It was the first printer to combine electrophotography and laser technology.

Although, the inkjet printer had already been introduced in 1976, it however, took until 1988 before the inkjet could become a household item, thanks to the DeskJet inkjet printer released by Hewlett-Packard. In 1992, the famous LaserJet 4 which was the first ever laser printer with a 600×600 dots per inch resolution was released by Hewlett-Packard.
